Worked example: registered charities with income of GBP 1 million or more

Choose the Charity Commission register, set Registration status: Registered, Main charities only and Minimum latest income: 1,000,000. These are registered main charities in England and Wales whose latest reported income meets that threshold.

The table shows 6 selected columns. The free CSV includes all 22 public columns for these first 5 rows. Blank source values stay blank in the CSV. Income is the latest reported figure and the address is the registered contact address, not necessarily where the charity operates.

Four charity lists you can build in a click

Each example covers the Charity Commission register for England and Wales and starts with registered main charities. Change or combine the filters in the list builder.

• Registered main charities. Exclude removed charities and linked subsidiary records.
• Latest income of £1 million or more. The minimum is inclusive. Check the financial year end alongside income.
• Activities mentioning food bank. Searches the charity’s own activity text; it is not a complete cause classification.
• Registered contact postcodes starting LS. A Leeds postcode prefix describes the registered contact address, not the area served.

Before downloading, review the charity register CSV columns, sample and latest import date. You can also compare the other available datasets.

Read the fields correctly

Registered charity number identifies the registration; linked charity number distinguishes linked records. The “Main charities only” filter excludes those linked records. Latest income and latest expenditure are filed figures in GBP, not forecasts. Financial year end is the reporting period; the DataScoop import date is separate.

Postcode matching uses a prefix: LS matches LS postcodes, while M also matches ME and MK. Use a district such as M1 when that distinction matters. Neither a registered address nor an activity-text match proves where a charity delivers services.

Open the CSV in Excel

1. Choose an example and check the rows and import date.
2. Download the free sample, which includes up to 25 matching rows and all public columns.
3. In Excel, choose Data → From Text/CSV, select UTF-8 and comma-separated fields, and keep charity numbers and postcodes as text.
4. Compare the income figure with its financial year end before combining charities in an analysis.

What is happening

Freedom of information requests on the public record ask for a CSV or Excel file of registered charities. Sector tooling and guides exist specifically to convert and join the official extract.

The official routes are legitimate, but neither route is the missing middle: a complete filtered slice as one flat file. The difficulty is in the shape of the product, not in your spreadsheet skills.

What it disrupts

• A list by income, activity or postcode becomes a conversion, import and table-joining project.
• The 10,000-row web export can stop before a broad query is complete.
• Teams either narrow the question to fit the interface or rely on a third-party aggregator before analysis can begin.

Why it happens

• The public register is designed for lookup and capped exports.
• The complete extract preserves relational tables rather than flattening the fields a spreadsheet user commonly needs.
• England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland maintain separate charity registers, so an honest national scope must be explicit.

Checks to make now

• Confirm that the Charity Commission for England and Wales is the register you need.
• Choose registered status, charity type, activity wording, postcode area and income range before exporting.
• Treat the latest reported finances as filed register data, not real-time accounts.

Where it fits, and where it does not

Proof and boundaries

This is the Charity Commission register for England and Wales, not a UK-wide charity register. OSCR and CCNI are not currently ingested.

Trustee names and the register's contact email and phone fields are deliberately not ingested. The output contains organisational register data.

Financial values carry the filing lag of the official register. Dates remain visible so users can judge their suitability.

There is no customer outcome claim yet. The mechanism is inspectable through the free preview, filter schema, import date and official attribution.
